How to crochet a classic granny square

A classic granny square is worked from the center out in rounds of 3-double-crochet clusters, with a chain-2 space in each of the four corners. Round 1 has 4 clusters; each new round adds one cluster to each side.

Step by step

  1. Make the center: Chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring (or start with a magic ring).
  2. Round 1: Chain 3 (counts as a double crochet), work 2 dc into the ring, chain 2. Work (3 dc, ch 2) three more times. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the first chain 3. You have 4 clusters.
  3. Round 2: Slip stitch to the next corner space. In each corner space work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), with chain 1 between the corners. Join.
  4. Round 3 and on: Work the corners the same way, and work 3 dc into every chain-1 space along the sides, with chain 1 between clusters.
  5. Finish: Fasten off, weave in the ends, and block the square flat (pin it, mist it with water, let it dry).

Questions

Why is my granny square twisting?

Turn the square over and check that you are working on the same side every round. Many crocheters turn the work at the end of each round to keep the square straight.

How many granny squares do I need for a baby blanket?

It depends on the square size and the blanket size: for example, 30 squares of about 6 in (15 cm) make a blanket of about 30 x 36 in (76 x 91 cm).
