How to make a magic ring (magic circle)
A magic ring is an adjustable loop you crochet into and then pull tight, so the center of a round piece closes with no hole. Wrap the yarn around two fingers, pull up a loop, chain 1, work your first round into the ring, then pull the tail to close it.
Step by step
- Wrap the yarn: Lay the yarn over two fingers so the tail hangs down and the working yarn (the end from the ball) crosses over it, forming an X.
- Pull up a loop: Insert the hook under both strands, catch the working yarn and pull up a loop.
- Chain 1: Yarn over and pull through the loop on the hook. This chain secures the ring and does not count as a stitch.
- Work into the ring: Work the stitches of round 1 (for example 6 single crochet for amigurumi) into the ring, over both strands.
- Close the ring: Hold the stitches and pull the tail firmly until the center closes. Then join with a slip stitch or keep working in a spiral.
Questions
Why use a magic ring instead of a chain ring?
A chain ring always leaves a small hole in the center. A magic ring pulls completely closed, which matters for amigurumi and the top of a hat.
How do I stop a magic ring from opening?
Pull the tail tight, then weave it through the first round in two directions before you cut it.
