How to single crochet (sc)

To single crochet (sc): insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on the hook), then yarn over and pull through both loops. In UK terms the same stitch is called double crochet.

Step by step

  1. Insert the hook: Put the hook into the next stitch (on a foundation chain: the 2nd chain from the hook), front to back.
  2. Pull up a loop: Yarn over and pull the yarn through the stitch. You now have 2 loops on the hook.
  3. Finish the stitch: Yarn over again and pull through both loops on the hook. One single crochet is done.
  4. Turning chain: At the end of a row, chain 1 and turn. This chain does not count as a stitch: work the first sc into the first stitch.

Questions

Why are my edges uneven?

Usually a stitch was added or skipped at the start or end of a row. Count your stitches at the end of every row and put a stitch marker in the first and last stitch.

Is single crochet the same as double crochet?

In UK terms, yes: US single crochet is called double crochet in UK patterns.
